Description: Evolution versus creationism (sometimes hot!). (Moderated)

Nothing but a fairytale
...< snip > ...Sean Pitman: Yep - and what are those odds? Have even a rough idea? ...How do you know it is "hardly surprising"? What are the actual odds? Only if you have at least some idea as to the actual odds would you have any basis to be surprised - or not. So, what are the odds? Where is your statistical basis for your non-surprise?... more »

Ice Age Oceanic Salinity
Hi all, Presumably, during the ice ages the salinity of the seas would increase. Clearly life has carried on as usual in the oceans, but have there been any big marine extinctions associated with this periodic increase in marine saltiness? Thanks, Mike

A matter of imagination: Is non-evolution possible?
Let's imagine, vividly, that we have, sitting on the kitchen floor, a very very simple, self-reproducible device, the size of a matchbox. Now imagine that each time it makes a copy of itself, it is slight miscopy, like a photocopy (never quite identical to the master copy). The structure of each offspring is randomly and slightly dissimilar... more »

Sincere incredulity in Creationists
I have often been puzzled by Creationists’ assumption that order and fineness of structure automatically support their argument, and not evolution. They presuppose that evolution must be a sloppy and inefficient force and they do not think it worthwhile to explain this presupposition. The Creationist arguments may be dishonest, but the incredulity... more »

Pitman numerology
This is a link to Sean Pitman's calculation for "how long would it take such a population [1E30 bacteria with a generation rate of 20 minutes and 1E-8/codon position mutation rate] to find a new beneficial function at the level of 1,000 fairly specified amino acid residues?" where he computes the answer 4E31 years.... more »

What is Confusion?
"Confusion" is a contraction of two words, "contrary" and "fusion." "Confusion" is therefore the fusion of two contrary concepts. Creationism-ID: causation is Divine, Intelligent or vertical in origin (= supernatural agency). Darwinism: causation is material, unintelligent or horizontal in origin (= natural agency).... more »
