Creating and editing

To get started with orkut, visit the orkut sign-in page, enter your username and password, and click Sign in. First, you'll need to create your profile:

• Add your most flattering photo to your brand new profile by selecting the general tab and clicking the add photo link on the left sidebar of the page.
• Include your name, last name, country, and other personal details on the general tab.

If later on you want to add more information or make any changes to your profile, just follow these steps:

1. Visit your homepage and click edit profile under your photo.
2. Click the tab that describes the section of your profile that you'd like to change.
3. Click update at the bottom of each page when you make changes.

Don't forget to use the status feature to give everyone short updates on how you're feeling, where you're going, or just something cool you found out. Learn more

Privacy

When you create your profile, or at any given time, you can set different privacy levels for your profile information. Just click edit next to the profile link, under your photo. On each tab, you can set viewing permissions for any fields that display a drop-down menu and a key icon.

For example, if you want everyone to be able to see your birth date, choose the date from the 'birth day' drop-down menu, select everyone in my network from the key drop-down menu to the right, and click update.

You can also select users from specific countries and regions to access your profile. Users who aren't from the selected countries or regions will see a reduced profile and won't be able to send you a friend request, unless they are friends of friends or can confirm your email address. Learn more

Themes

Themes are a fun way to customize your orkut profile. You and anyone else who has access to your profile will be able to view your theme. Here's how you can change the background of your profile and scrapbook page:

1. Click the settings link on the left sidebar of your orkut homepage or profile page.
2. Go to the themes tab.
3. Select the theme you'd like to apply to your profile.
4. Click update at the bottom of the page.

If you change your mind, you can always go back to the settings page and select another theme.

Photos, videos, and apps

Photos | Videos | Apps

Photos

Upload your favorite photos to orkut and share them with your friends or everyone in your network. You can have thousand of your photos nicely organized in albums. To create a new album and start adding photos to it, follow these steps:

1. Click photos on the left sidebar of your profile.
2. In the 'new album' section, enter an album title and an optional description.
3. Click create. Your new album will immediately appear in the Albums section below. Now you're ready to start adding photos to it!
4. Click the album you want to add photos to.
5. Select a photo by entering the filename or using the Browse button in the 'upload photos' section.
6. Click upload photo.

Repeat these steps for each photo you want to add, or try our bulk uploader. Your photos are automatically displayed from newest to oldest. Here's how you can rearrange your photos:

1. Click photos on the left sidebar of your profile.
2. In the Albums section, click the album you'd like to reorder.
3. Click reorder photos below the album title.

4. Drag the photos into the desired order.

   
5. Click save changes.

Videos

Let your friends know more about you and what you like by adding video links to your profile. Here's how:

1. From your homepage, click videos on the sidebar.
2. In the 'Video URL' field, enter the URL for the video you want to add from Google Video or YouTube.
3. Click the add button. You'll see a confirmation message that your video has been added to your favorites.

Communities

Create and join orkut communities to connect with people who have similar interests as you. To get started using communities, simply click the manage link in the 'communities' section of your profile page. From here you can search or browse for communities or create a new one.

Once you've joined one or more communities, check out these features:

Polls

Community polls allow you to ask other orkut users for their opinions. If you want to know, for example, what's that other community members love the most about orkut, you could create a poll about it to find out.

Events

You can create community events to plan parties or let other community members know about upcoming events related to your community.

Communicating with friends

These are some of the many fun ways you can communicate with your friends using orkut:

• Testimonials: You can write testimonials about your orkut friends that will show up on their profile. Use testimonials to let other orkut users know how great your friends are!
• Messages: Sending other orkut users private messages is a great way to keep in contact with friends or make new ones. Unlike scraps and testimonials, messages are totally private (just like email), so go ahead and say anything you want. ;)
• Scraps: Scrapping is one of the most popular ways people communicate on orkut. Just click scraps on someone's profile page, enter your scrap (you can use HTML to add rich content!), and click the post scrap button.

Updates

The 'updates from my friends' section on your homepage lets you know what your orkut friends have been up to. It shows updates when your friends on orkut:

• make changes to their profile
• accept new testimonials
• make changes to their photo albums
• update their status
• change their video favorites

Similarly, when you make these changes to your own profile, your friends will see your updates on their homepages. You can control if you want others to see updates you've made. Learn more.

orkut Mobile

orkut mobile allows you to quickly and easily access orkut from an Internet-enabled phone or mobile device. To do so, simply visit http://m.orkut.com using your mobile device; you'll be able to see your profile and access many of the same features that are available on orkut when you sign-in to your orkut profile on the computer.
