Oh hai, you know what a LOLcat is, don’t you? It’s a picture of a cat doing something cute with a funny caption. It could be a sad cat with “emo cat wishes u wud leave,” a relaxed cat holding a beer bottle with “a drinking problem…I has it,” or an angry cat with “grudge cat iz still ignoring u.” These sorts of images and captions starting floating around the internet sometime in 2005, created by cat lovers with an ear for the LOLcat language, which is half baby talk, half internet slang, and has been called the internet’s first dialect by those who like to get intellectual about things like LOLcat.

In 2007 some clever people named Eric Nakagawa and Kari Unebasami cofounded the website icanhascheezburger.com and made it LOLcat central, a clearinghouse for the best and brightest LOLcats from around the world. For their book, I Can Has Cheezburger?: A LOLcat Colleckshun, out this month in a small and glossy format, they selected more than two hundred epic images so that fans can enjoy LOLcats anytime, whether the internets and their amazing tubes are near or far.
