Change We Can Believe In: Barack Obama's Plan to Renew America's Promise

There are two men running for president but, judging from the bestseller lists, one is getting more ink. That candidate is Barack Obama and there are books about how horrible he is (The Case Against Barack Obama, The Obama Nation, and The Audacity of Deceit), as well a few from the candidate himself (The Audacity of Hope and Dreams from My Father). As for John McCain, he’s also written some noteworthy autobiographies in the past decade (Faith of My Fathers and Worth the Fighting For). Both of Obama’s autobiographies, as well as John McCain’s memoirs and treatises about the importance of courage and good character (Why Courage Matters, Hard Call, and Character is Destiny), are well worth reading. However, none of them are recent releases, and therefore we’re turning our attention to Obama’s latest, Change We Can Believe In, a book that’s equally relevant to Obama’s detractors and supporters, since it offers a fairly straightforward overview of the candidate’s politics and belief system. If the McCain campaign had released a comparable book in the last few months, we would review it here.

Change We Can Believe In includes a foreword from Obama, the text of seven “key speeches from the 2008 campaign,” and some photos of the candidate beside barns, firefighters, and school kids. In the great tradition of politicians everywhere, some of this is a bit hokey or vague, but it still gives a sense of what Obama believes in and why people are attracted to his oratory and vision. Whatever your politics (or lack thereof), we urge you to read this book, educate yourself about McCain, watch the debates, and then, if you’re over eighteen, get out there and vote on election day.
