Keystrokes not registering? A Flash update might do the trick

It has come to my attention that some users have reported problems with keystrokes not registering within the compose box of the All-New Yahoo! Mail.

Our engineers are working on the issue, but in the meantime you may be able to resolve it yourself if you make sure your browser is running the most current version of Flash.

To determine the version number please go here:

http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/about/

If it’s older than 9.0.115, please upgrade and then see if the issue continues to happen.

Thank you for your patience while we work to resolve the issue you’ve reported.

Little more importance of why the update is needed, would have been lot helpful. Where does flash take part in new mail interface?. I was under impression that whole thing is pure javascript based like gmail or live.

Prashant,

Flash isn’t critical to the core functionality, but there are some adjacent features that incorporate some flash elements. Our goal is that core functions work anyway, but there may have been an unexpected problem.

don’t waste your tim updating flash cuz it didn’t fix the problem restarted no repair it only does this on yahoo browser ohh you also can’t most of the time attach files or it takes forever to wait for those stupid revolving arrows to stop i think the yahoo web site is to secure that is why things do not work some times because the web site computers scan all files before letting them procede through their system, just like they say to safe no go ohh well

Ryan, Can you give me any advice on the newest flash upgrade. Ever since that came out my computer has a hard time recognizing a keystroke. Have to click up to 5 times sometimes to get it to work. Some of our favorite webpages come up all white and we cannot use the site at all. I have went thru their trouble shooting steps to no avail. I am so frustrated by the whole thing. Tried to send an email using Yahoo this morning. Every time it would either kick me out of Yahoo email or the internet explorer would shut down. Tried 5 times and gave up. HELP!!!!!!!!! Thanks so much for your help. Sheila

Hey Ryan,

I posted a comment about getting the status of a feature request (whether it was being implemented or tested or anything), and you said if it was a small feature you might be able to give details. Well, a few weeks ago, I posted a feature request to the mail blog and was just curious to the status of it. The feature in question is a stock ticker for the yahoo! mail portal. (not a my yahoo module, or a widget, but a stock ticker built into the yahoo! mail page (like the news, mail, and weather are). Thanks for any information!

It doesn’t matter if you fix this problem. Yahoo Mail Search continues to be broken. (For months now). I can’t search for emails anymore. Almost every search fails, even if I know the email that I’m searching for exists. Yahoo Mail is going down the tubes. I’m very disappointed.

I can’t believe the comments that have been made here. Isn’t there like a deffermation of character of something like that when you degrade a person and accuse them of things. I am not upholding crack heads by any means were I live I believe even some of the teachers are on it. However it isn’t ethnical to go around making accusations by no means. And I am not following any one about the yahoo maill I have never had a problem with it. Maybe whoever is accueing them of being on crack may be hitting the pipe themselves and hacking into ya’lls mail???????HMMMMMMMM something to think about. YA THINK?

Why do you insist on destroying a once great website? Flash??? Give me a break!! Flash is the LAST PLACE Yahoo should be!! Yahoo was great because it was simple FAST text based site. Now you joined the rest of the crack-smoking Flash addicts!!! RIP Yahoo.

I only have the keystroke issue when using Google Chrome, but I’ll check if a Flash update helps.

FYI, I (and I’d guess most ppl) still like the new YMail. And search is working fine for me.

Yahoo should stop using Flash technology especial for something as simple as text input. Flash will not work with screen readers and adaptive devices for keyboard and mouse input used by thousands of handicapped people on the net. Flash hinders communications.

Alan Fine - 12 year Yahooligan loosing faith in Yahoo for stupid decisions like Flash replacing standard text input and Yahoo’s removal of mail search, Yahoo’s blocking of attachments from certain business applications etc…

When can we expect some improvements..?? Calendar, more color schemes. And, Hotmail has an awesome inbox audio player. Why can’t Yahoo do the same thing..?? Its becoming more tempting to discontinue Yahoo Mail and switch to Hotmail…..??

I actually agree, I’m not sure why flash is being used in Yahoo Mail. It would be helpful if we knew what specific function it served, in terms of our inboxes.

Ditto what Elizabeth said. I have had Flash 9.0.124.0 installed for quite a long time, and it’s still impossible to compose an email. I end up writing it in Notepad and copy/pasting my text into every message.

Yes, search hasn’t worked for me in months. I have a lot of email in a lot of folders, so a search that works across *all* emails is essential. As a long-time Yahoo user, I’m also disappointed at the focus on cosmetic interface enhancements at the (apparent) expense of basic functionality.

From an e-mail sent to Ryan today…

Ryan, as you can see, my comments and signature (from Regards to X1) are in red…how did that happen??? Well, the previous e-mail I sent I added comments in ‘red’ so the receiver could see my comments mixed in with the original text…makes sense doesn’t it?

Why would Yahoo think that from that point forward I want all of my e-mails to be in red…that DOES NOT MAKE SENSE!!!

Another point, sometimes I copy text from Word or a web site and want to include it in my e-mail. I WISH you had a “PASTE TEXT” option because I just want the text and not the formatting that may come with it.

Another, when you send a draft and hold down the shift key you get “Type Mismatch” error…what is that and how do we fix it?

OK, how do I get my signature and text to be in black…I went to Options/Signature and guess what, the signature is in black…so what is the secret??? AND, when I tried to go back to e-mail I keep getting a message asking if I want to save changes and I can not get out of it.

Another point…when you do a search, the results do not fit across the page AND there is NO horizontal scroll bar so you have to squeeze the heading together to see all of the columns…surely someone thought of a scroll bar, right?

These are basic…Yahoo mail has been out there long enough and we should not see these problems…it seems like Yahoo is taking one step forward but two back!

Why don’t you get one of the fundamentals fixed in your email, something simple like taking care of the emails whose headers are dated in the future which are obviously spam. I pay for pop mail so Outlook without any further configuration filters out all the spam. It only makes sense, but I suspect Yahoo is helping out the spammers.

Holly,

Have you tried the Flash update suggestion? I believe the chat function is one of the components that relies partially on Flash technology.

This is slightly off topic but is quite disturbing to me and I was hoping someone could address it. Today I got a spam email that originated from my own yahoo email address! Or, at least that was the return address that was listed in the “from” column. I was wondering what happened, and how to handle deleting such an email… would marking it as “spam” then treat all emails I might make as spam? Any insights you have would be most welcome.

Dean,

Unfortunately that isn’t something that an email carrier has much control over. It requires that another email provider, and potentially an email client, not use an address without validating its authenticity.

Yahoo! Mail will not allow anyone to send a message from a Y! Mail account, using an alternate email address, unless the user can prove that they have access to that account.

While I am happy to see that I am not the only one having the keystroke problem, I am disappointed that it has not been fixed. I have the latest Flash player, so that is obviously not the problem. I want to stay with Yahoo but I am forced to switch back and forth between old and new whenever I want to type a message. This is very frustrating to say the least.

The new mail didn’t always have this problem, so what happened?? Please get this fixed soon!!

Does this issue include alphabet keys highlighting other links on the compose webpage? And when hiting the return key commands the highlighted link?
