While the majority of Myspace users do not commit fraud or scams, there are a few who will attempt to take advantage of you. Beware of Overpayment Fraud or "Nigerian" Scammers here or anywhere on the Internet!
A common way these people will attempt a scam is by offering you a check for more than the amount of the itema and requesting that you wire them back the difference. The check is fraudulent, and you will be left owing the bank the money instead, and will have lost your real money to the scammer!
Be careful with any of the following transactions/solicitations:
- Transactions involving overseas or out-of-town buyer.
- Offers that involves a cashier's check, money order, or wire transfer.
- Offers that involves an escrow service (BidPay, Squaretrade, etc.)
- Offers that involves buyer's own personal shipping service or personal FedEx account.
How to protect yourself:
- Deal with local buyers only.
- Never accept a check for more than the purchase price.
- Never agree to refund overpayment via wire transfer or any other means.
- Never give out personal information such as Social Security or checking account numbers
Please report scammers to MySpace.com so we can remove their accounts and prosecute any violations.
