How do I set my profile to private?
Setting your profile to private is one of the many MySpace privacy features we offer. In order to ensure your privacy you will have to go to your account settings.
If you are using the classic view You will find your account settings tab located just to the right of your default picture directly under Edit Profile. Once you are in the Account Settings page find the tab labeled Privacy. From there you should see a section that says “Profile viewable by”. You will need to make sure it is set to my friends only by checking the box and hitting save all changes. This will allow users who are not on your friend list to only see your name, default photo, location and contact table.
If you are using one of the new skins: You will find your Account Settings tab in the navigation bar on the right hand side next to the Sign Out tab .
You have now made your profile private. You can check to make sure the change went thru by first going to MySpace.com. Open a new browser box and without logging in place your URL in the address bar. Your profile should now come up private. Please keep in mind the update make take a few minutes. If after that time it still isn’t coming up private feel free to report it to myspace.com/myspacehelp.
If you’d like to further increase your privacy setting options you can manage that from your privacy settings as well. Some of the options include hiding your online status and birthday, blocking users under 18 as well as by individual user, and keeping your photos from being shared/emailed. All of these options can be done from the same section and is as easy as clicking your mouse. You will notice by every option under your general Privacy Section there are check boxes. Check the box of the option you’d like to choose and hit save all changes. You have now increased your privacy.
You can also decrease the amount of non-friend messages you may receive by following the same procedure as before. This time instead of clicking the privacy tab you will need to click the spam tab which is located directly to the right of that. Once on your spam settings page you will see many options to better secure your account. You will notice that under communications settings the set up is much like your privacy settings. Here you can control who can and cannot send you messages, invites and friend requests. You can also greatly regulate the amount of spam you get by opting to require CAPTCHA when a user messages, comments, or sends an add request. Look over the options available and choose which settings you’d like to apply to your account by checking the boxes by the corresponding options and hitting save all changes. You may also set your Spam Presets to Low, Medium, High or Custom. We also recommend that you read toms blog about phishing located here and our safety and security page located here.
