What is Lorem Ipsum?42 days ago

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Why do we use it?

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).

Where does it come from?

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..", comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

The standard chunk of Lorem Ipsum used since the 1500s is reproduced below for those interested. Sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 from "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" by Cicero are also reproduced in their exact original form, accompanied by English versions from the 1914 translation by H. Rackham.
Where can I get some?

There are many variations of passages of Lorem Ipsum available, but the majority have suffered alteration in some form, by injected humour, or randomised words which don't look even slightly believable. If you are going to use a passage of Lorem Ipsum, you need to be sure there isn't anything embarrassing hidden in the middle of text. All the Lorem Ipsum generators on the Internet tend to repeat predefined chunks as necessary, making this the first true generator on the Internet. It uses a dictionary of over 200 Latin words, combined with a handful of model sentence structures, to generate Lorem Ipsum which looks reasonable. The generated Lorem Ipsum is therefore always free from repetition, injected humour, or non-characteristic words etc.

Somebody pleeze fix our blog product.90 days ago

If anyone is listening, I would love to see the bebo "blog" product capable of pulling in an external feed and displaying it as my own. Even better would be a cross-post from bebo feature that automatically sends off to my blogger.com acct.

Tomorrow, I'll be working with Irina Slutsky from Geek Entertainment TV (and podtech). We will be doing an online dating tv commercial spoof. I was wondering if anyone wanted to participate. Let me know, I'll be leaving work a little early on Wednesday to shoot.

Galaxy537 days ago

Well, as most of you know my dog Galaxy is missing. I wish more people in San Luis Obispo county used Bebo, or for that matter the internet. I spent as much time as possible the last two days hiking through poison oak, driving around, posting flyers, making phone calls, sending emails and looking everywhere I can access within about a 500 acre range.

She disappeared from my parent's house in Arroyo Grande late on the night of Memorial Day, right after having a seizure. She was kicked in the head by a horse 8 years ago and has a seizure about 3 or 4 times a year. It usually takes her about 20 minutes to recover from a seizure and she ends up pretty disoriented. I am hoping that someone took her and is just being lazy about reporting her, or that she lost her tag - though I realize that she may have had another massive seizure somewhere and died alone.

This has been pretty tough on my family since we lost another dog earlier this month. They used to keep my grandfather company and warn my parents when a anyone came within a half mile of the house. We also have a cat that is now an easy target for the coyotes without a dog to protect him.

So, I'll be posting more photos and doing what I can while I can. I really appreciate all the support.

April 7, 1969: Birth of That Thing We Call the Internet593 days ago

1969: The publication of the first “request for comments,” or RFC, documents paves the way for the birth of the internet.

April 7 is often cited as a symbolic birth date of the net because the RFC memoranda contain research, proposals and methodologies applicable to internet technology. RFC documents provide a way for engineers and others to kick around new ideas in a public forum; sometimes, these ideas are adopted as new standards by the Internet Engineering Task Force.

One interesting aspect of the RFC is that each document is issued a unique serial number. An individual paper cannot be overwritten; rather, updates or corrections are submitted on a separate RFC. The result is an ongoing historical record of the evolution of internet standards.

When it comes to the birth of the net, Jan. 1, 1983, also has its supporters. On that date, the National Science Foundation’s university network backbone, a precursor to the World Wide Web, became operational.

New Bebo Logo602 days ago

We officially launched a new logo for Bebo last night...

It doesn't look like such a dramatic change, but believe me, we spent a lot of time on it. You will notice that the type has become all lower case and the color has shifted in hue to a true red. The letters have rounded ends to keep consistent with the overall curvature of the design. Also, we removed the sub text on each of the product logos. And of course, the "Mickey Mouse" ears are gone - for good.

Hope you all enjoy!

New smilie icons...614 days ago

FYI, we added a few new smilies: a "rednose" [rednose] for red nose day and a [clover] "clover" for St. Paddy's day.

To use the red nose icon, type:

(less than symbol)rednose(greater than symbol) = [rednose]

(less than symbol)clover(greater than symbol) = [clover]
