I pray thee, protect my family
And bless this firefighter who is yours.Firefighter’s Prayer
by Janice Dean
As the wife of a New York City Fireman, I wanted to pay tribute to all those who gave their lives to save others 7 years ago tomorrow.
I see flashes of sadness in my husband’s eyes from time to time, and the weight he carries with him being one of those who survived. I know he questions why he was spared that day while most of his firehouse died in the line of duty. I wish I could take away that dull ache that never goes away after losing your brothers. I wish I could spare him from the nightmares that continue to haunt him when he sleeps at night.
People ask me if I get scared or nervous knowing what my husband does for a living. Yes, there are times when my mind starts to wander, and worry about the risks he takes on a daily basis, but I also realize that what he does is a calling. It’s what he loves to do, and despite the risks, I know he goes to work each day knowing his mission is to help others. Everyone who walked into those buildings on that fateful day 7 years ago in uniform had the same goal: to save lives. No one imagined how many of them would never walk out alive.
I think of the little boy that’s growing inside of me, and how I can’t wait to see what a wonderful father and role model my husband will be to our son. I get excited thinking about them playing catch together in the yard, or to watch them read a book together, or give him an encouraging hug when he needs it. I imagine my son’s eyes lighting up when he visits his dad at work in the firehouse.
Please take a moment to remember those whose family members never came home to them that day seven years ago. Tell those around you how much you love them. Take a moment to appreciate the people you care about. You just never know what can happen…in an instant.
Heroes
My Heroes are the 343 Men that give there lives on 9-11-01.The Women and Men that have lost there lives and the ones that are still in Afghanistan.FIRE FIGHTER'S PRAYER
When I am called to duty, God,
Wherever flames may rage;
Give me the strength to save some life,
Whatever be its age.
Help me embrace a little child
Before it is too late;
Or save an older person from
The horror of that fate.
Enable me to be alert and
Hear the weakest shout,
And quickly and efficiently
To put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling and
To give the best in me;
To guard my every neighbor and
Protect their property.
And if according to your will
I have to meet my fate;
Please bless with your protecting hand
My friends, family and mate."Fallen Angels"
(A tribute to the Worcester firefighters)
Another day, another call
Firemen hurried one and all.
They geared up and moved out, no time to spare
As the sirens pierced through the December air.
It was duty, a calling, their passion, their way,
To save the public from their darkest days.
Out of habit they worked without fear, without fret,
Now these heroes are ones we will never forget.
I wonder if they reflected on the hope their lives gave,
On this day when it was only God who could save.
To the soul mates I hug you and join in your tears
On this day when reality has overcome your fears,
But know he’ll be with you in spirit, in love,
He’ll be watching and guiding from high above.
To the children, though this grief may now seem too great,
Know that your daddy had a hero’s fate.
And know he’ll still be there in every possible way,
Let his memory bring you joy, each and every day.
To the parents be proud that this man was your son,
Look back at his life, cherish what he’s done.
Think about all of the lives he has touched,
Take comfort in the fact that he loves you so much
To the siblings, grandparents, grandchildren friends,
To aunts, uncles and cousins that he loved to the end,
Know that his life was not taken in vain
Let pride in all he’s done take the place of your pain.
To his “brothers and sisters” who shared in that calling
Don’t feel guilt or regret as your tears are falling
But feel honor and appreciation for all that you do
Stand strong, stand together, let that strength help you through.
To God with whom these men have now gone
Know that recollections of these lives on Earth will live on,
Please bring peace to hearts that are suffering today
As they wonder how to go on, please show them the way.
And to the six fallen angels whose lives have been lost,
Know that we recognize your work and its cost.
Thank you for all who you’ve helped and you’ve saved,
For the time and the love, and the life that you gave.My Tears Will Not Wash Away That Night
I close my eyes
My tears will not wash away that night
I hear your voices
You are somewhere, but nowhere to be found
O God! Please help us
We cannot leave them behind
My tears will not wash away that night
The world as we knew it fell upon us
We were left with the greatest loss
Jerry, Joe, Timmy, Tommy, Jay and Paul
This was not supposed to happen
Not here, not like this
My heart is heavy
If only my tears could wash away that night
I try to forget the fire with memories of you
I see your smiles and hear the laughter
To no avail, the pain returns
Overwhelmed, I must let go
My tears will not wash away that night
I open my eyes
I know my life is forever changed
Will my heart be restored?
The need for faith and love is so much more
Thank God for my fellow firefighters, family and friends
A city wraps her arms around us, a country follows
My tears will not wash away that night
A family emerges beyond the family of firefighters
The brotherhood of men and women holding hands
Shared compassion, profound understanding
Everyone united in the healing power of love
My tears will not wash away that night
Blessed are we to have known such men
Their courage, selfless gift of love never to be forgotten
The wisdom and strength gained will sustain us
Their loving presence will always be
I am honored to be a firefighter. When duty calls me, oh Lord, my partner,
When flames do their destructive work,
Give me strength to save lives
And, above all, keep my courage bright.
With you will I reach, before it's too late,
The injured child, the helpless old person,
With your generosity, may I be able
To spare them the horror of such an end.
Since I must always be alert,
I pray thee, oh Lord, guide my every move,
And in the infernal tumult of the fire
Let me hear the feeblest cry.
I will glory in the fulfillment of my destiny,
For is not life-saving the most noble calling?
When the storm is over and all have returned home,
Then will I be proud to have helped my neighbor.
If it should happen, by thy will,
That I must give my life,
I pray thee, protect my family
And bless this firefighter who is yours.
