As the world continues to be dogged by viral diseases, the UN's World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warn that the H5N1 Avian Influenza virus may soon mutate into a human to human transmissible form, causing an epidemic worse than the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic. Even now, H5N1 is trying to find the right mutation to become a pandemic.

We are a group of public health professionals, medical personnel, and academicians in the areas of microbiology, pathology and virology who are concerned because bird flu has been fatal to 90-100% of infected poultry and other birds and 50% of the people who have contracted it, authorities have been unable to guess how many people a mutation would kill. Previous global epidemics claimed 50 to 100 million lives -- about 2%-3% of those infected. But the coming flu pandemic could be far worse. We welcome new members to our group.
